A TECHNO-DYSTOPIA AND NIGERIAN CYBERSPACE: A READING OF ELNATHAN JOHN’S BECOMING NIGERIAN

Abstract

This paper examines the effects of high technologies and cyberspace
on the middle-class Nigerian citizens which create a wide gap to the
cultural living and socio-political existence of people who are depicted
in a fictive nation. The text Becoming Nigerian is adopted to analyse
the textual representation of Techno-Dystopian and social livelihood
in Nigerian context through the Third wave of Eco-critical theory.
The author (Elnathan John) ingeniously creates fictitious Nigerian
situations in a satiric form to foreshadowing how middle-class people
are inflicted with the use of machine or rather technological
equipment. The paper analyses the problems of cyberspace to the
cultural life of working-classcitizens of the fictive Nigeria via the Third
wave of Eco-critical perspective which highlights on dystopian issues
in a cultural environment. However, Nigeria as a social setting, John
depicts how low-income earners are suffering because they cannot
indulge with the sophisticated technological machines, as such their
interaction and social activities become filthy and less advanced.
