INTER-GENERATIONAL COMMUNICATION BETWEEN ELDERS AND YOUNG PEOPLE IN KATSINA: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

This paper explores the dynamics of inter-generational
communication between elders and young people in Katsina State,
Nigeria, using the Ethnography of Communication (EOC)
framework. It investigates how cultural norms and values, language
use, and generational differences influence communication patterns
among the elderly and the youth in Katsina State. Through
participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and focus group
discussions, the study reveals that while Hausa is the primary language
of communication, the increasing use of English among youths poses
communication challenges. Additionally, distinct communication
styles and power dynamics contribute to misunderstandings between
generations. The findings highlight the need for culturally sensitive
communication strategies to bridge the gap between elders and youth
to foster more effective dialogue and preserve cultural heritage. By
understanding these communicative intricacies, the research
contributes to the development of practices that enhance
intergenerational relations in Katsina.
