PRAGMATICS OF CODE-SWITCHING IN MULTILINGUAL ONLINE COMMUNITIES

Abstract

In multilingual online communities, code-switching has become a
dynamic communicative strategy shaped by technological spaces and
diverse cultural identities. This paper examines the pragmatic
functions of code-switching in digital interactions, focusing on how
users shift between languages to manage meaning, negotiate social
relationships, and express cultural belonging. Unlike face-to-face
communication, online platforms provide unique contexts such as
comment threads, group chats, gaming forums, and social media
posts, where language choice is both deliberate and socially symbolic.
The study explores how code-switching performs key pragmatic roles:
signalling group solidarity, marking stances or emotions, indexing
cultural identity, mitigating face-threatening acts, and managing
politeness. It also highlights how digital affordances such as emojis,
hashtags, and algorithm-driven visibility interact with language
choices to enhance or shift pragmatic meaning. Particular attention is
given to youth-driven spaces, where rapid language blending reflects
evolving linguistic creativity and social alignment. Drawing on
examples from multilingual digital communities, the paper illustrates
how pragmatic failure can occur when participants misinterpret the
intentions behind code-switching, especially across cultural or
linguistic boundaries. The discussion also considers how platforms
